Kathmandu: The Ministry of Urban Development has clarified that the natural rocks at Chobhar Galchi, a vital drainage outlet of the Kathmandu Valley, will not be broken. In a press release issued Thursday, the ministry assured that only debris and garbage will be removed to address recurring flooding issues during the monsoon.

Ministry spokesperson Narayan Prasad Mainali emphasized that there is no plan to dismantle or widen the Chobhar Gorge, and termed reports suggesting otherwise as misleading. “The Chobhar Gulch is of religious, cultural, and historical significance, and we are working on a long-term solution to manage flood risk without disturbing the natural heritage,” he said.

The ministry's plan involves clearing sediment, identifying landslide-prone areas, and conducting technical studies for future flood prevention — all without altering the natural structure of the gorge.

This clarification follows rising public and political concern after the 32nd meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority directed coordinated efforts — including with the Nepali Army — to reduce potential inundation in the area.

The ministry expressed dissatisfaction over “unnecessary confusion” spread on social media and stressed that human safety and heritage protection will both be prioritized in all future interventions.
